How is lasik Performed ?

  a) Patient is given mild sedative tablet
 
  b) Eye is anesthetized by drops
  c) Suction ring is applied to hold eye steady and check eye pressure
  d) Microkeratome (computer-driven scalpel) cuts thin layer (flap) of cornea
  e) Flap is lifted and moved to side
  f) Laser is carefully aligned over cornea
  g) Computer – controlled excimer laser burnd away tissue from cornea
  h) Flap is returned to original position
  i) No need to pad & patch the eye, just wear the dark glasses
     
What precautions should I take during laser surgery ?
  a) Your cooperation during surgery makes it very simple and fast.
  b)

Don’t be nervous & follow the doctor’s instructions as there want be any pain but mild discomfort may be felt.

     

How soon my eye will become normal ?

  a) Eye sight is improved within 2-3 hours
  b) If little pain after surgery, pain killer tablet will take care of it.
  c) Dark glasses for few weeks is recommended
  d) One can resumes their routine activities within one or two days
  e) For few days, night vision might be poor
  f) Some Patients see glares, halos and starbursts in dim condition, very less with c-lasik
  g) Dry eyes need frequent drops
  h)

Greater the correction, longer the time to become normal.

  i) Eye sight continues to improve for one or two month
     
Will I Need Glasses after Lasik ?
  a) Most of the patient do not need glasses.
  b) Most patients over 40 will need reading glasses or they mau go for presbiopc lasik.
  c) Patients who wore bifocals might choose monivision – One eye for seeing at a distance & other eye for reading or presbiotic lasik.
     
Who is the ideal candidate for Lasik ?
  Age :
  a) This can be done at any age, but best between 18 years to 40 years
  b) Early operation can be possible in patient with refractive error in one eye ot stable for two years
  c) Over 40 years one can go for “Presbiopic lasik.”
     
 

Refractive status of eye :

  a) Stable refraction is must. There should not be any change or a little change in refraction (less than 0.5 in last one year)
  b) The result may vary depending on the type of Refractive error
     
  Health of eye & overall health :
  a) Severe dry eye or it should be treated first
  b) Conical Cornea
  c) Infectious diseases of eye
  d) Systemic diseases like collagen disease are contra indication
     
  Willingness of the patient :
  If one does not want spectacle or contact lens & eish to do the surgery, it is the treatment choice.
     
What Preparations are needed ?
  a) Usually both eyes are treated simultaneously
  b) Remove the contact lens before the surgery as per doctor’s advise
  c) Avoid the eye cosmetics before the surgery
  d) Complete eye exam for 1) Health of the eyes 2) Current vision, 3) Retina
  e) Analysis of eye pressure, shape of cornea, thickness of cornea
  f) Antibiotic eye drops as per doctor’s advise
  g) Make financial arrangements
